17" - 19"

Yesterday it snowed. And it snowed and snowed and snowed.

Sounds like the beginning of a dystopian children's book. And it felt like one, too.

It snowed all day long, and the snow accumulation was ginormous.

I started shoveling at the driveway. Then, I cut through the front yard, shoveling a path through where the grass would be. Then, I cleared off the porch & stairs, shoveled to the end of the walk, and thought about what it would be like if I lived somewhere that had actual curb, gutters, and sidewalks and was required to shovel them too. As it was, I ended my shoveling at a 15" snow dead-end.

I shoveled back through the grass, back through the driveway, to the gate leading to the side yard. I shoveled that sidewalk and the back porch, shoveled a cul-de-sac in the yard for Meg to do her business; then I tapped the snow off of the shovel, my boots, brushed off my pants and coat, came in through the side door with the shovel to be placed strategically out the driveway door for when we need to shovel our way out again... and there was another 3 inches waiting for me at that door. So, I growled, put the shovel away outside, shut the door, and continued to growl at everyone and everything for as long as my anger could be sustained... which wasn't very long, actually. It takes an enormous amount of energy to sustain that sort of out of sort anger.

Before nightfall, I took a tape measure and cellphone camera outside & measured in the high snow place and the low snow place and here are the pictures.

I'm glad that the snowfall came on President's Day when Matt was home from school and Steve was home from work... even though Steve chose to go out to AA for the noon meeting and got stuck in a snowbank on his way home... at least he was home before dark.

Today is a regularly scheduled day. Thank heavens for Clay, our across the street neighbor, who, with his 4 wheeler complete with blade for plowing, dug out our driveway for us. Otherwise, Matt and Steve would still be digging their cars out.

Drive safely. Stay warm. And enjoy the view of the "beautiful snow" (bah humbug!) from the warmth of the indoors.
